A Person in a Place with a Problem

I have not advertised this blog to anyone so I realize that I most likely have zero readers. But then again, that is not why I started it. I am trying to overcome writer's block by creating a place that I can just write . . . stuff, without worrying about it being perfect.  Having said that -

It is said that a short story (or maybe any bit of fiction) should have a great first line (or lines). Great first lines should usually incorporate "a person, in a place, with a problem (or in a situation of interest)."

Here is a single line example;

"This is a tale of a meeting of two lonesome, skinny, fairly old white men on a planet which was dying fast - Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut

And an opening paragraph example from one of my favorites:

"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge. - Raymond Chandler, Red Wind.

So what would be the first line of the story of my life? Maybe something like this...

"He was 57 years old standing in his yard staring at the grass, his feet planted firmly on the wrong side of the center of his life."
